So here is the problem. I have been out of the SCA for several years and would very much like to get back in to it (once I find a job and can afford it...that's not the problem :)...)
My problem is finding a reasonable story to explain why my boyfriend is a Norseman, and I am from Turkey. Does one of us have to bend here? Or are trading expeditions reasonable as an explanation for our meeting?

Fri, February 13, 2009 - 10:52 PMVarangian Guard. You don't mention if you are from Turkey during the Byzantine era or more inland, but Norsemen were on the coast of Turkey. -

Fri, February 13, 2009 - 10:54 PMOh, and the Norsemen were great traders, and Turkey was a crossroads for marketing and exchange. So you could have met on a trading expedition.

Sat, February 14, 2009 - 9:24 AMWhat the others have said. Byzantium had a lot of Norse mercenaries.

Re: Plausability
Sat, February 14, 2009 - 9:32 AMWhew! I know quite a bit about Turkey from about the 16th century on, but have not yet delved in to earlier history. Now I know what to look for, at any rate (yes, I am thinking more Byzantium for the personas.) Thanks everyone! -

Re: Plausability
Mon, February 16, 2009 - 8:14 PMBy the way, feel free to not explain that kind of thing. I used to worry, and many women do worry about the periodness of their relationships. Mostly because their men choose manly personas from periods where the garb is boring. And Many of the reactions I got from my explanation were raised eyebrows and a distinct look of "Who gives a flying fuck anyways?"
So don't strain yourself on it. -

Re: Plausability
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 6:34 AM"My boyfriend and I are interested in different cultures and times in history", thats what I would say. If you want to come up with a plausible explanation, historically speaking, go for it it could be fun. But I have never looked at a couple in the SCA and wondered what their historical back story was.

Sat, March 28, 2009 - 9:02 AMWow! You guys are taking it farther than most! I applaud you! I think that is very interesting! I would never go to the trouble of trying to make my persona and my boyfriend, mate or spouse match up in any way! I wouldn't because I want to do what I want to do and if he is going to play SCA with me, I don't care too much what his persona is 'cause I'd just be thrilled he'd chose a persona and play!!!!

Re: Plausability
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 9:28 PMOur storyline is we're Zoroastrians fleeing religious persecution in the Middle East and captured by French Pirates and brought to Europe. We're a tolerant religion so you make sure you bring your Turkish and Norse booties to our encampment.

Re: Plausability
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 5:20 AMI have to agree with Octavia. I know MANY SCA couples, including some well-known Laurels, who don't sync up their SCA persona's lives in any way. And think of ti this way -- Royalty doesn't have to sync up their personas, so why should you? Heck, I'm mindful of Darius and Roxane of the East Kingdom; one's early-period Roman, the other late-period Persian!
Trading stories are always a mess, anyway; the vast majority of the population in period just wasn't mobile like we are, today. Just come on back, keeping researching your personas, and have fun. :)
