This is an early notice as we're still waiting on schedule confirmation -
We're looking for performers!

Sadika al Masri and I would like to host a "Folkloric Dance Show" at Pennsic this year (in the Ampitheatre or Performing Arts Tent). Our hope is to stimulate more interest in historic representations of dance.

We're hoping that in addition to traditional Middle Eastern folkloric dances like Tunisian, Debke, Oulid Nail, Ghawazee, Tahktib, there’ll also be performers from other cultures - Japanese, Indian, Central Asian, etc.

True to the SCA ideal, a “reasonable attempt” at authentic re-creation (of garb, persona, and dance style) is expected; documentation is encouraged but not required. We WOULD like written background information on the performance so we can read it before your performance.

We're not authenticity police--modern renditions of folkloric dance is OK--we know documenting dance in period is not easy so we are relaxed about this. We're just looking for a "reasonable attempt" -

So, if you're interested in doing a performance of staged ethnic/folkloric dance from ANY non-European culture, in close approximation of SCA-period garb and style, to live OR recorded music, please contact me here or at
anthea at kawakib.com

*If you have any contact info for other cultural groups I'd apprciate it!*

I hope you jury or audition for this event, as it will raise the bar a little over the "well, it's an attempt!" that still falls more into the category of Goth, Punk, Shredder, 1960's Bedlah, etc.

I'm just tired of having the atmosphere polluted by a few who have no intention of preserving the decorum. Pretty much what happened to the "all comers" Expo, in my opinion.

I'd be interested. The style of Indian dance that I do is based on Kathak and is called Bollywood Mujra. It follows traditional Kathak story telling conventions and uses Kathak footwork, spins and costuming but has been made more interactive and "audience friendly" in modern times. True Kathak is considered somewhat "dry", while Bollywood Mujra is more for "entertainment".
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathak
      www.samirashuruk.com/mujra.html
I would be using music written in modern times, but following traditional Kathak patterns and with all traditional instruments.
Would this be something you might be looking for?

        hi Samira,
indeed! Yes, if you can make it look Pennsicy & not modern? Can it be like a glimpse into days gone by? I'll put you on the mailing list for updates, whenever Pennsic gets a volunteer to schedule the performances this year -
        Thanks!

Kathak started in ancient India and the style I do carries on these same storytelling traditions.
I don't have video of me, but here is an example of the music and style of dancing.

            hi Samira,
that would be a very welcome addition to the show - tho the setting won't be similar, I think the audience will be ;-)

              Thanks a bunch Anthea!
Maybe it's time to start a scheduling thread.
When is the Expo? When is the Cure Salee? When will the folklore show be? Then we can work on scheduling haflas and classes.

It's unlikely we'll know any of these answers for certain for months. Speaking from experience on working in "the system"? It takes months just to get information from all the parties on who can do what stuff when. And that's before the internal scheduling work begins.
Mihri, who is working on our behalf@Pennsic this year with Pennsic Classes, can say much more about the details. My suggestion would be to have folks who want to do stuff, to use this time to get your lists of people together, and agree on preferred dates & times. Have as much info as possible ready for when scheduling requests go in, but be ready to be flexible. It really is like playing Tetris with people's requests! Not only do we need to have our info ready to go, and as "professional" as possible, it's also true that the easier we are (within reason!), and the nicer we are (usually...) the more chance we have to get the spaces and times we really want.

Note that anything not going in "Official" Pennsic spaces, like class tents, you can schedule today. Just be aware that you might get a really cool Dance Tent class conflicting!

Last I heard there was no volunteer yet to schedule performances this year, so that's what we're waiting on. My preferred times were first weekend evenings (Fri/Sat/Sun); and I believe they usually schedule in 2 hour blocks?? BUT I would be surprised if we could not get this FDS done in an hour....

p.s. you may call me Atesh in this context lol

If they don't have a performing arts coordinator, I'd send your request to the Minister of Cultural Affairs for now... she can forward it on when they have a volunteer.

                  culturalaffairs@pennsic.org

As the ME class coordinator, (yes, again!), I really don't have anything to do with how things are scheduled in the performing arts tent. The best I can do is offer you an evening time slot in the ME dance tent, like we did for the closer-to-period hafla last year.

hi Christina, I emailed the schedule info & request to Chai'sun (who is "cultural affairs" I think), and she offered to fwd it to whomever is supposed to get that info - whenever they get someone, but thanks :-)

I've been able to confirm that there is *not* a Performing Arts Tent coordinator at this time. The good news is The Minister of Cultural Affairs seems to be pretty good at communication and she knows that I am interested in finding out who the PA tent person is as soon as one is designated. When that happens I'll contact you with the info.

That said, I talked with my troupemates and we'd be interested in doing a Saiidi stick dance for the folkloric show. We realize that women dancing with sticks is a more recent phenomenon, but the moves and the music of the choreography are quite traditional and the number is just a ton of fun to dance and to watch. It's been years since we've performed this number and we've been looking for a really good reason to resurrect it!

I'm grumpy too - is that an age thing?

I think the expo is great if that's what they want to do...

I don't want to get into auditions, it's vacation :-) and who has time for that? But we'll try to make "informed decisions" based on the info people give us. We know dancers can't document much from our time period, but we can do something more period-like than the "anything goes" thing that happens in Pennsic bellydance shows -

I think this is an excellent strategy. I would not have signed up for this great event if it required auditions - I agree, Pennsic is fun and vacation. But, I also agree with Durr's concerns - and I would argue that they can addressed without formal auditions: when a dancer provides some background information (workshops taken, books read), that gives the organizers a pretty good idea where a performance likely to go. And, if one is looking for an extra safety net, should a performer hand in a CD with what appears like unsuitable music, the organizers can always ask for a clarification before the performance, and if that does convince, not include the dancer in the lineup.

Anyways, GREAT IDEA! Thanks a lot for taking this on.

We're talking the ME Class tent, here.

The Performing Arts tent is not part of this particular conversation.

            Tue, March 10, 2009 - 12:15 PM
I think we have two conversations going on here. I believe the hope is to have the folkloric show in the performing arts tent, but if it can't be there it can be in the ME tent like the closer-to-period hafla was last year. Your suggestion of sand in the "tent" may have left some confused as to which of the two tents mentioned you were referring to.

That said, I have put in a request for sand in the ME tent, explaining the dangers of the lumpy ground that we dance on. At some point I'll start a new thread about the ME tent this year (likely when class registrations open) and if I have an answer by then, I'll let you all know.

Besides, I'm going to need help filling holes with sand if sand is approved in the budget. ;-)

Sand is east. Work is hard.

This goes back to the old days where we hauled buckets of sand from the classic swimming hole to the orluk to fix the floor (it didn't get flat without help, folks.)

On the other hand, if you don't care, we won't either. (I'm about to be very incorrect...)

I've been told that sand can most likely happen. I'm sure anyone who's injured an ankle dancing on that ground will be willing to lend a hand or two in getting the sand put where it needs to go. I don't think we'll be hauling it from the swimming hole either. ;-)

The folks in my group, Min el-Jbal el-Zarr'a are planning on signing up to host a night at the ME tent as requested in another thread, I'm sure we can lend a couple of hands to spreading sand and such. I'm glad to see that people are already chiming in with ideas for this show, I think it will be awesome and will really be a learning experience for everyone.

Fantastic! A night with MJZ should be a blast.

I'm really looking forward to the folkloric show. I know that my hubby Baris and I can lend hands to prepare the space/ spread sand.

Thanks Atesh and Sadika for coming up with the idea and making the folkloric show a possibility. :) I think it's going to be a splendid addition to the performance line-up @ Pennsic.

                  From Atesh's first post:
"Sadika al Masri and I would like to host a "Folkloric Dance Show" at Pennsic this year (in the Ampitheatre or Performing Arts Tent)"

Regarding sand (and me questioning it)

                  later...from Mukhtar Durr
"We're talking the ME Class tent, here.
The Performing Arts tent is not part of this particular conversation. "

That would be great in a different thread, then, wouldn't it? This particular conversation started out about a lovely folkloric style show in the Performing Arts Tend or the Ampitheatre.
Trying to organize sand for the ME class tent potholes would be a wonderful topic.

That sounds fine - I know many of our "regular" folkloric dances are more recent, but would look OK in a period-ish show (depending on garb & music, really).

Hi! I'm not sure if I should reply here or start a new topic but I wanted to know if/when the folkloric dance show at Pennsic is going on. I normally do a lot of Rromani but I've been feeling the Khaleeji bug lately ;) But I don't want to do it by myself!

                If this is going on,
                1) can I come play?
                2) is Khaleeji ok?
and 3) does anyone else wanna dance some khaleeji with me? :D

I've seen your wonderful dancing Pacita - personally I'd rather see the Rom stuff as it would be more periodish than Kaleeji, I think - ? I understand wanting to do something new tho.

I think "nobody" has heard from the official organizers so far on scheduling.... so we're all working blindly still - I'll add you to the email update list tho :-)

Really? I would have thought that Khaleeji is older. And as I understand it, Romani is not that old either ;) I'll have to see what I can dig up on khaleeji...when I get a chance that is :)

I think rom has been documented to be period.
Khaleeji however is based on the folk dance movements of the gulf regions- and tribes that have been in that region since the times of Mohamed (and before).
...I'm also a huge fan of Iraqi dance, which is related. Here's a very modern version for an example. They really get going after minute 2

Really? Cool! Can you point me in the direction of the period Romani documentation? I would love to see it. I recently was told otherwise but could not ask at the time where they got their information.

Point-blank, yes, the Romani people are 100% period -- in fact, it's likely they came from India in period. I recently posted to the SCA India list a recent bit of research on them from a genetic standpoint, underscoring that India-origin theory.

There is evidence for dance. We're pretty bloody sure Flamenco is from Romani peoples, for example. Yet I'd be wary of something as broadly-termed as Romani Dance; these folks were quite well spread-out, and we're talking a lot of suppressed history over hundreds of years. I'm curious as to exactly what you learned, however; maybe that'll help us figure it out. :)

For general Romani information, the "single best book" is likely THE GYPSIES by Fraser:

                          www.amazon.com/exec/obido...nromanigyps

I also would STRONGLY recommend reading through The Patrin website, esp. as it might soon go away with the Geocities shutdown:

                          www.geocities.com/~patrin/

That site is one-stop shopping for a very serious and focused understanding of the Romani (and better, in my opinion, than Romani.org!)

Thanks Asim, I'll check out those links :)

I know that the Romani PEOPLE are period but what I'm looking for is period documentation for the turkish 9/8 "karsilama" style of dance with the gestures and pelvic lifts. I recently was told that that particular style is NOT period and definitely modern. So if anyone has documentation or information on when that particular style arose, I would love love love to see it :)

...and, what Asim was saying- Romani people were period is what I've known about.
I have no idea how long 9/8 dancing as we know it today has been around. I also have no idea how long those particular rhythms have been used in the region. If I were to pursue period dance documentation for 9/8 I'd first research the music.
...Just realized I might have access to Iraqi information through friends. Hmmmm....will have to start to ask. :D I'm always asking about music/dance/culture info that relates to my work, which is of course current and modern history.
