Hey All,
Samira and I were talking about a couple ideas for classes. These are to get dancers used to dancing to live music, and musicians used to playing for dancers.
We thought of an idea of a class (to be held at M.E. Dance/class tent) where dancers and musicians are all in the class.
Everyone would learn about how a show is put together (the 5 part routine, etc.) I'd put together small groups of musicians and they would play for the dancer and the dancer would pick songs, dance, etc. Everyone who is waiting to go next would applaud and smile :)
We're finalizing the idea still. But we really want to get people over the hump of dancing to live music (and playing for dancers)...

Re: Carmine and Samira class ideas
Tue, March 10, 2009 - 11:03 PMYay, thanks for posting Carmine!
This class will take some pre-planning. Input is welcome.
Our thought it to have a list of songs available BEFORE hand.
In the class we'll cover a bunch of stuff - communication, typical routines/choices according to audience type etc. Then everyone (who wants to) will have a chance to perform for a warm and supportive audience. -

Tue, March 17, 2009 - 1:51 PMMaybe this is the kind of class we should do twice?
I think it would be fun.
Any ideas/input? -

Wed, March 18, 2009 - 8:19 AMMaybe we could make it a longer class with a break? (Aaron wants to see his wife during Pennsic)

Sat, March 21, 2009 - 5:32 AMTwice would be great! I have a friend who drums but is also a heavy fighter & misses many cool classes like this because they are often during battles. -

Re: Carmine and Samira class ideas
Sun, March 22, 2009 - 6:00 PMI actually heard that because there is less class space this year (with the loss of Orluk as space for dance classes) that classes can only be held once. -

Re: Carmine and Samira class ideas
Mon, March 23, 2009 - 5:45 AMThat's not necessarily true. What *is* true is that classes being offered more than once will be the first to go if we don't have space for everyone. This will be done from the highest to lowest quantity. In other words, a class being offered four times will be cut down to two before a class being offered twice is cut down to only once. Also being taken into account is are the number of classes a single teacher is teaching. A teacher offering four classes will likely lose classes before a teacher offering only two.

Re: Carmine and Samira class ideas
Thu, March 26, 2009 - 5:12 AMI think this is a great idea. With some refinement...
Samira, it would be great if you could explain the difference in a typical Egyptian vs. Turkish vs.Vintage Orientale vs. Tribal fusion set. I think these are important distinctions. Specific musical examples from each of these genres could help --- classic Egyptian intro, beladi taqsim vs. 9/8, karshilama. Maybe that's too much for one class.
And also, it seems like it could get really tedious to have each dancer in the class dance to a set, particularly if they were just at the point of learning each part of a set and how it was strung together. Maybe it could be more of a lecture and listen class? With some exciting demonstrations by Samira and Carmine?
I'm just throwing ideas out...
