I just moved to Chicago a couple of months ago from MI. Does anyone know if there's an SCA group around here who do ME dance/music? I wasn't able to find much on the SCA website.

about this year's Folkloric Dance event at Pennsic (x-post)

A brief recap on the first annual Folkloric Dance Show at Pennsic!

It was a lovely clear and warm evening at the Middle Eastern Tent... otherwise,.squeezing the audience, musicians & dancers under cover would have been squishy. We’re deeply thankful to Mihri for inviting us to use the Tent, since we had received no response on scheduling time in one of the public performing spaces. Thanks also go to Sadika al Masri for her assistance with the live music; and to my personal assistant Rajni of Orluk Oasis who helped in numerous athletic ways legging it around Pennsic; as well as Saahira of Isenfir.

We enjoyed the presentation of dances from the Middle East and Central Asia; in the future we hope to include even more diverse cultures from across the globe.

Dancers included Nesheli, in a Romani dance inspired by Artemis Mourat; Narah, who shared an Egyptian folkloric dance, Raks al Assaya; Nina Amaya danced in Turkish folkloric style to music performed by Dragon Song; Min el-Jbal el-Zarr’a played for a duet by Saahira and Kirsten; Mairead ny Mannin, with the Raven Raqs Beledi musicians from Thescorre, presented a Classical Persian Dance combining both court and country stylings; Pacita improvised a lovely performance to live music in when technical difficulties prevented us from using the music she’d prepared; and Damia al Kaheena bint al Waha from Orluk Oasis improvised an Algerian folk dance in the manner of the Oulid Nail of the Bou Saada region.

I thank you all for helping us present an enjoyable, entertaining, and educational dance show!

If you’d like to be included in updates on next year’s show please let me know (if I already have your email I’ll keep you updated unless you’d like to be removed). Please contact me (Atesh) directly, not here, at anthea at kawakib.com

Please, please, please make a few extra copies and take them to YIV when you arrive at war, that way newcomers can get a copy as well (or you if you forget to take yours!)! The folks there are very generous to allow us to use their establishment every year for Haberci, so please stop in while there and have some of their excellent coffees and desserts!

Greetings everyone!
So, you can put everything I know about period persian dancing in a VERY short email, but at MidEast Feast this August they are requesting/ encouraging Persian dance. I did find *a* video of the Silk Road Ensemble and a clip from Louchia, but that's it! Can somebody help me search this, please?
Many, many thanks!

I am hoping to get this out this week so need submissions by tomorrow.

Want to make a donation to help with copies, just email me and I will give you my paypal info.

Hypnosis for Bellydancers Workshop at Pennsic!

Hail,

Just wanted to let folks know that my very popular "Hypnosis for Bellydancers" workshop is coming to Pennsic. I consulted with professional dancers and instructors to create this class, which customizes self-hypnosis and relaxation techniques to benefit dancers at any skill level.

In case you're wondering what qualifies me to teach this workshop, I'm a professional hypnotist as well as a performance Laurel and former Premier Bard of Ansteorra. I've worked with bellydancers from one coast to the other and recorded bellydance music with the Austin-based band Belaharr.

The class was added too late to be listed in the printed Pennsic U schedule, so be sure to check the online schedule for the time and location. I normallly charge for this workshop, but in keeping with SCA tradition, I'm offering it free at Pennsic. Non-dancers, especially spouses, are invited to observe as well.

If you have any questions, please drop me a line at harmonyhypnotist@gmail.com.

Lux et Pax,

hello,

my fiance'e and i are having our wedding at pennsic 2010 and are looking for drummers/dancers/fire performers to do their thing at our event. we are not loaded due to the current economic situation but if anyone could perform for a very reasonable price or , even better, for free food and drink while at the event then please let me know. as a heads up i am checking so early because, while i am getting married in a year, my father will be getting remarried at this upcoming pennsic (2009) and he was hoping that i could help him out with finding some entertainment. if you can help or know of anyone who might be able to help for either of the two upcoming weddings please let me know. thank you so much!!!!

X post - Middle Eastern Ensemble at Pennsic 2009 with Lady Melissa of Orluk Oasis and Friends!

Hey everyone! If you play it….bring it! Time to go get your band or orchestra instruments out of the attic or storage and BRING THEM TO PENNSIC! Yes…Lady Melissa of Orluk Oasis aka the crazy Clarinet Goddess ( I have been promoted from chick) is encouraging even more people to participate in the fun Middle Eastern music scene at Pennsic.

Keep in mind this is the only time many of us see each other, so let’s be welcoming to everyone’s instrument regardless of period correctness. Many of us leave Pennsic and return to areas where there is no Middle Eastern music scene. For the majority of musicians, this is their only chance to jam together.

I have a new website for my sheet music. http://www.BellydanceSheetmusic.com I still have 11 discontinued Concert C pitch music books that contain 24 songs available for purchase at the bargain basement price of $35 shipping included. This is for the discontinued BOUND BOOK ONLY. (Not the pdf files.) Please visit my website http://www.BellydanceSheetmusic.com to purchase the discontinued book and my PDFs of new songs printable on your computer!

I am teaching at Sheque’s Touch the Earth Tent in the Marketplace on Aug 1, 2, 3, 5.

Saturday August 1st 1-3PM – New Hafla Songs for Middle Eastern Ensemble! All instrumentalists (non-period included) and all percussionists welcome! The new songs will be Chaje Shukarije, Muhabbet, Ushti Babo, Mavi Mavi, Shish Kebab, and Konyali. I will teach the vocals to Ushti Babo and Chaje Shukarije if I have interested singers. Free lyric sheets will be rippable from http://www.BellydanceSheetmusic.com soon. Sheet music is purchasable in advance at http://www.Bellydancesheetmusic.com or will be purchasable at Pennsic.

Sunday August 2nd 1-3PM – Art of Taksim with Basic Makam Theory. All instrumentalists are welcome (non-period included). Many of us have no experience with improvisation! Let’s get some! Remember that I was a band dork for years and years and was not allowed in Jazz Band because I played clarinet. If I can taksim, SO CAN YOU! Taksim isn’t the mystery that it appears to be. There are some easy to follow thought processes that will help musicians become better improvisationalists. I will cover the important notes in a makam, the difference between a taksim in a fast tempo song, a slow tempo song and a taksim that is a solo introduction to a song. I will also give tips for being a band leader in the amateur Middle Eastern music scene versus how the “real guys” do it. If there is time we can cover modulation within a taksim (changing the key). Stylistic feedback will be given. Patient drummers are needed to accompany this class. ***This class is a musician pre-requisite for Art of Taksim for Middle Eastern Dancers and Musicians on Sunday August 2nd at Middle Eastern Tent that I am co-teaching with Zarifa of Watan.****

Monday August 3rd 1-3PM – Aziza and Tough tunes for Middle Eastern Ensemble. All instrumentalists and percussionists welcome. We will cover Aziza, Hicaz Oyun Havasi, Nihavent Saz Semai Variation, and Shehnaz Longa (available for purchase at http://www.BellydanceSheetmusic.com) Most of these are difficult songs for melody musicians, so sight reading sheet music will be a definite advantage. Get your sheet music in advance online. Percussionists are encouraged to learn along with us! Nihavent Saz Semai Variation is a song that uses the Semai rhythm and changes to a Laz 7/8. Aziza is rhythmically complicated for percussion, but many drummers are already familiar with the piece. Hicaz Oyun Havasi and Shehnaz Longa are classic fun fast Turkish folk songs that use maqsum, malfuf and baladi rhythms. Not necessarily in that order. :-)

Wednesday August 5th 1-3 PM - Galloping Is For Horses, Get the Zill Skillz to be a Musician. Yes there is more to zilling than LRLRLRLRLR. Allow me to give you some helpful hints on what to play on your zills with the song, so it doesn’t sound like a fire alarm going off! I will not teach any dance moves, only zill patterns that work with songs. I will cover Fire Dance, Hadouni, Garoon and Uskudara. However, the skillz you get in this class can be applied to any song you dance to! Melody musicians and percussionists – please help me out by playing music in the class, thanks! I don’t want to use a CD player….

Heloise and Alexandre of Akeru Thunder are co-teaching Middle Eastern Ensemble for all instruments and percussion at Sheque’s Touch the Earth Tent, covering songs that I have taught in the past. This class is for folks who missed some of my sessions in past years and want to work on songs I am not covering in my classes this year. Heloise and Alexandre will be using my sheet music (available at www.BellydanceSheetmusic.com) and will have extra copies available to purchase or to borrow. They are well established SCA musicians, have taken many workshops with me, attended multiple Jalsahs and are “Certified By Ishtar”. I thank Heloise and Alexandre for helping me out this year!
11a-12:30p on August 1st
11a-12:30p on August 5th
1:30a-3p on August 6th

Sunday August 2nd 3-5PM at the Middle Eastern Dance Tent, I am co teaching with Zarifa of Watan The Art of Taksim for Middle Eastern Dancers and Musicians. This is everyone’s chance to work together. What happens when two people are improvising at the SAME TIME? Zarifa and I will talk about what we think about, listen for and watch for when putting a Live Dancer together with a Live Musician! I know few Pennsic participants have an opportunity to put their dance skills together with live music and for live musicians to work with improvising dancers. This is our chance to work together. Stylistic feedback will be offered.

Zarifa will also be teaching a Turkish Dance class at the Middle Eastern Dance Tent on Monday August 3rd from 1-2:30PM.

If you have any questions about ***anything***, please email me at MELISSA@ISHTAR-MUSIC.COM

See you at Pennsic and BRING YOUR INSTRUMENT!

For those who don't know, each year for Pennsic I (with some help) produce a flyer that's made available free (while supplies last) at Pennsic. This has class listings (both official classes and non-official classes), a performance calender and an event calender (haflas, informal performances and parties that cater to those whose interests in the SCA lay in the Near or Middle East).

If you know that your group is having an event that you want listed on the calender, please let me know so that I can include it!

Because Tribe is a pain these days, please send me the information through tribe and to my yahoo email ( teinenishea@yahoo.com ), so that I can include it. I will need Name of host or hosting group, date and time, location (block number and camp name if its not at official place like the ME tent), brief description and other information as necessary.

Hello all! You now have until May 15 to submit your classes for the Pennsic book. I've noticed some of the usual suspects have not yet submitted classes (although I understand the person in charge of scheduling is wading her way through about 100 classes, so it could be that they're in but I don't have them yet). Get those classes in...the sooner the better!

FYI the following days are filled up already:
Fri, 7/31
Mon, 8/3
Thurs, 8/6

Some of the other days only have one or two open hours left and classes get scheduled as they come in.

Michigan Event!! July 11th - Clancy Day

Hey there. Thought I would post this and get it out there. The weekend of the 11th of July the Midrealm is having it's Clancy Day event. And I am holding my hafla there this year instead of at the usual event due to scheduling conflicts for myself. I really want to make this fun and HUGE. After all, a big hafla is a fun hafla.

This is a call out for drummers, dancers, even folks that play with fire. Water and snacks will be provided as always. If you should have any questions, please let me know. Being as the hafla is on a Saturday night, all are welcome to camp in our little hafla area. Just let me know. I have posted event details below. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Clancy Day will be held at Camp Rotary, in Ray Township. It is about 45 minutes from Downtown Detroit, as well as Sarnia, ON, about 1.5 hours from Ann Arbor, and 2 hours from Lansing. Attend a local Pentamere event, stay for the weekend, and save gas money while still having lots of SCA fun!

The site features plenty of space for all of our planned activities, as well as camping!

A Google Map of Camp Rotary is available here. We recommend using Google Maps for directions to the site.

Site will open at 5pm on Friday, July 10th. Troll will remain open until midnight, then reopen at 8am on Saturday.

Site closes noon on Sunday, July 12th.

The site is pet friendly (all pets must be kept on leashes, and their messes cleaned up promptly!). The site is also DISCRETELY DAMP. Please hide all mundane alcohol containers and clean up your bottlecaps!

There are flush toilets on site, but no showers are available.

Merchanting will be outdoors, with no additional merchant fees above site and camping fees. Please bring your own tables and shade.

Site Fees: (all in USD, CDN taken at par)
$8 - adults (ages 13+)
$4 - children ages 6 - 12
Free - children 5 and under
Family Cap - $24
Camping Fee - $5 per tent

NMS Surcharge of $3 will be applied as necessary

No Pre-Reg is available for this event

x-post: Folkloric Dance Show at Pennsic

This is an early notice as we're still waiting on schedule confirmation -
We're looking for performers!

Sadika al Masri and I would like to host a "Folkloric Dance Show" at Pennsic this year (in the Ampitheatre or Performing Arts Tent). Our hope is to stimulate more interest in historic representations of dance.

We're hoping that in addition to traditional Middle Eastern folkloric dances like Tunisian, Debke, Oulid Nail, Ghawazee, Tahktib, there’ll also be performers from other cultures - Japanese, Indian, Central Asian, etc.

True to the SCA ideal, a “reasonable attempt” at authentic re-creation (of garb, persona, and dance style) is expected; documentation is encouraged but not required. We WOULD like written background information on the performance so we can read it before your performance.

We're not authenticity police--modern renditions of folkloric dance is OK--we know documenting dance in period is not easy so we are relaxed about this. We're just looking for a "reasonable attempt" -

So, if you're interested in doing a performance of staged ethnic/folkloric dance from ANY non-European culture, in close approximation of SCA-period garb and style, to live OR recorded music, please contact me here or at
anthea at kawakib.com

*If you have any contact info for other cultural groups I'd apprciate it!*

Thanks Samira for getting the ball rolling on different topics for classes for Pennsic! I would like to know who is planning to teach what kind of class, so I can contribute something useful and unique to my fellow dancers.

Thanks!

Yup, planning almost a year in advance so I expect y'all to come and play (and play)! Set aside Feb 27th, 2010 for Dun Carriag's "A Day in the Middle East". Same site as this year though we will be lowering the number of feast spots unless we get REALLY GOOD PRE REG! We will have our usual prize drawing for one of our lucky pre-regs to help that along. =) Teachers, musicians to play in the hall during the day and performers are all welcome!

Greetings, everyone! I have a request for all teachers who have not yet submitted your teaching requests. Due to the return of the daily class listings in the book (yay!!) and the desire to cut down on paper and printing costs, class descriptions are to be 150 characters or less.

I know that's not a lot of space to describe a class, but that's the way the Powers That Be want it. PLEASE stay within the 150 characters or I have to e-chase you down and ask you to shorten it anyway. I just sent out several emails of this nature and it's time-consuming for both myself and the teachers having to re-work their descriptions.

Please feel free to cross-post this to other lists and such that I may not be on.

So, after reading much discussion on another forum, I've decided that I am NOT teaching a bellydance class this year, because I have nothing period to teach.

Now, before we get all "but you should" here, I make this decision not out of anger, but out of the realization that I can't be a hypocrite. I can't complain about the lack of period clothing, and the presence of melodia pants and "belly bunnies" at Pennsic, and then teach a class that teaches non-period dance moves, and encourages the burning man east mentality.

I love that so many folkloric classes are being taught, and "period-feeling" classes are being offered- it makes me excited to take them!

And I also would like to ask everyone teaching something "non-period" to think about why they are teaching it, and if it benefits the historical goals of the SCA. I don't want someone coming to Pennsic just to bellydance- I want someone to come to experience everything we love about it, and maybe learn a little bit more. And considering I can find bellydance classes anywhere but I cannot find "Ottoman line dances" anywhere, I'm glad that there's a distinction. :)

Note: I am not criticizing someone who chooses to teach a non-period class- dancing will happen, and I'd rather it be good dancing, rather than just a "whole lot of shakin'". But I do want to see some of the "belly bunnies" go away- and by limiting the amount of non-period classes, I feel that could help.

Note the second: I am NOT posting this to open a whole can of worms, although I certainly realize that could be a consequence of this post. I will willingly delete my initial post if it leads to any kind of flaming on this tribe.

And as my Baron has decreed that "bellydancing" needs to come back into our Barony, I look forward to obtaining all sorts of period info to bring home and share with my fellow dancers.

So here is the problem. I have been out of the SCA for several years and would very much like to get back in to it (once I find a job and can afford it...that's not the problem :)...)

My problem is finding a reasonable story to explain why my boyfriend is a Norseman, and I am from Turkey. Does one of us have to bend here? Or are trading expeditions reasonable as an explanation for our meeting?

Scanning the Alhambra's writings

Found on, of all things, a gadget website ( http://bit.ly/ba6z ):

----------------

The Alhambra in Granada is so vast and covered with carved Arabic writing that nobody has ever had the ability to catalog it all. Finally, using modern technology, it's doable.

According to the Guardian and the Independent, experts are hard at work collecting over 10,000 inscriptions that nobody has translated in over 500 years since Ferdinand and Isabel evicted the Moors from their mighty fortress. Using the high-tech gear, they've managed to translate about half of the job so far, and have compiled over 3,000 in a DVD. The work continues, and an updated DVD, possibly complete, will come out in 2010.

----------------

The post at the above link also has links to UK newspaper articles on the topic, for those seeking more information.

Hi everyone! Its getting close to Lilies, and I wanted to officially invite everyone out! We will be featuring lots of dance classes, garb classes, drumming, cooking and culture classes. We will certainly be the life of the parties and are planning to have a dance expo. There will be several areas on site solely devoted to Middle Eastern activities all day long.

Lilies runs from June 13 through 21 just north of Kansas City.

We are still looking for teachers, so if you'd be interested in showing off your specialty, or just want more information, please message me and let me know!

Thank you all!

Carmine and Samira class ideas

Hey All,
Samira and I were talking about a couple ideas for classes. These are to get dancers used to dancing to live music, and musicians used to playing for dancers.

We thought of an idea of a class (to be held at M.E. Dance/class tent) where dancers and musicians are all in the class.

Everyone would learn about how a show is put together (the 5 part routine, etc.) I'd put together small groups of musicians and they would play for the dancer and the dancer would pick songs, dance, etc. Everyone who is waiting to go next would applaud and smile :)

We're finalizing the idea still. But we really want to get people over the hump of dancing to live music (and playing for dancers)...

Greetings! The Barony of Cynnabar is hosting it's annual dance event on Saturday, March 28: http://terpsichore.cynnabar.org/. There will be Middle Eastern and European dance and music classes all day, with a Grand Ball and Hafla in the evening--plus our famous dessert revel. Lunch and dinner taverns will be available, and there are some good restaurants within close walking distance.

If anyone is interested in teaching a ME dance or music class, please contact me as soon as possible. Some of the classes we have lined up already: Morning warm-up, Intro to ME dance, Beginner and Intermediate ME drumming, Intro to ME music, and Improvisational Dance. Please note we will have a performance section at the hafla (great for beginners!), followed by open dancing with music by real live musicians ;-)

Please contact me with any questions,

ME Tent and improvements

Last year we were able to gain a table, a white board, and a water cooler. This year we're going for sand to fill in holes. I have already requested the sand and it looks possible, although has not been promised.

Now would be a good time to bring in any other discussion about the ME tent. As the coordinator for classes and activities in the tent, I can address issues, concerns, and suggestions and bring them to the Powers That Be. I'm happy to do so. I took on this job for the past few years to help out the ME Pennsic community and to give us the best that we can get from Pennsic's already thin budget. Just remember though that there *is* a budget and not all things will be possible.

We have some interesting challenges this year as well. We have lost Orluk Oasis as a class site and although we have counted on it for years now, we must understand that the Oasis is a private camp with private citizens and the makeup of any private camp will change over time, along with their needs and desires. I'm sure I'm not alone in having a ton of gratitude for the denizens of Orluk Oasis for giving us class space for the time that it has been able to do so. Things change and we have to go with the flow.

This means that scheduling at the ME tent is going to be tighter than ever unless another private Pennsic camp or group steps forth to offer class overflow space. I'm not counting on that at this time, as that is a lot to ask of anyone (my camp would kill me if I tried to volunteer it). I'm going to have to ask for your patience and understanding as the scheduling process happens because not everyone will get what they want. When class registrations begin I will post about the scheduling process to better inform all of you of how things are generally done.

For now, feel free to post with questions and suggestions.

[am posting this because it is a rare opportunity
especially appropriate to this community of this tribe]

I am compelled to let go of my treasured longtime
vintage postcard collection of Middle Eastern subjects,
mostly DANCERS and MUSICIANS from
North Africa, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia & Egypt
including belly dancers and tribal dancers
with quite a few women of the Ouled-Nail tribe
Classic authentic costumes, great jewelry and attitude

Only real antique postcards, mostly about 100 years old (1900-1920)
which were originally published in North Africa & Europe (France)
These are just not commonly available anywhere.

My loss can be your gain !! This is an extensive selection of rare ethnic photos.
Many of the cards are available immediately and more to come over the next 2 or 3 months I expect

Here is the link:

Thinking ahead- classes next year

So, in my pouty state about not going to Pennsic this year, I figure I can ask for help from you all. :)
While you are at war, checking out the class schedule, attending classes etc- please keep in mind what you want to learn NEXT year. Usually right after war is the best time for this sort of feedback.
Is there something you feel needs to be covered? Is there a subject you're dying to learn more about?

What IS appropriate SCA "bellydance garb"?- Let's discuss...

I ask this not as a newbie trying to figure out what to wear. I ask this as someone who sees the very knowledgable people in this community, and wonders if we could come to a consensus. So, I ask your opinions...

The SCA states "a reasonable attempt at pre-1600 garb" (paraphrased)- which does mean that my beloved keyhole neck ghawazee is technically out. It also would frown against "tribal' dance garb.

So, what do you all think? What do WANT to see, what do you ACCEPT seeing, and what makes you want to put your own eyes out?

For those who dont know about this event, or for those who might have forgotten its fast approach:

This is one of the best Middle Eastern events the SCA has to offer! I've gone each year since it started and it just gets better and better. You want to see fabulous garb? This is the place to see it! Want fantastic music and open dancing all day? This is the place. Classes? Yup, got those too. And this event has such incredible atmosphere, its very "transporting"

And the food. OMG the day board alone is absolutely astounding - and then a full feast follows!

More information, directions and registration info can be found at the link below!

Hope to see many of you there!!!!

"Period" and functional costume for dancing

These questions were provoked by the "SCA vs Tribal" thread, but I'm posting a new thread, since I'm hoping for some serious, thoughtful answers.

Practically speaking, while I love my jingly belt and kuchi jewelry, and my chiffon veils and naked tummy, I know these aren't authentic styles of clothing for 600 to 1600 AD ME women. So, what DO I wear if I want to recreate the clothing, if not the dance styles, of Middle Eastern women during this time, and still be able to MOVE comfortably?

I have a real, practical need for this info: three women in my group have been asked to do a ME dance as part of the entertainment at feast at an upcoming event. There will be some European dance, some bards, some other stuff, too. So we want PERIOD garb, not what we wear to dance around the fire or at the Tribal dance shows.

I've been to Dar Anahita's page, and I get a little confused about Persian vs Turkish, as well as how some of the styles are copied (lots of the costumes are significantly different from the sources; e.g., a pirahan with narrow, tapering sleeves is recreated as a chemise with wide bell sleeves). I have seen SOME documentation on al Andalus ( where the styles look nothing like the styles elsewhere, but they DO have coins decorating jewelry and clothing!)

I'm so confused I'm almost ready to dance in a potato sack ('cept potatoes aren't period, either!)

Can anyone point me towards recordings of danceable period music? or a list of rhythms that are documentable into period?

I'm finding that while it is the SCA which brought me to dance, that period musicality is not my strong point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Persian Dance Level One --Shahrzad Khorsandi

I recently received this DVD and I wanted to share my thoughts on it with the Scadian dance world. Level one has very basic movements that are broken down in a clear and precise manner with easy to follow instructions and a nice, basic performance at the end to showcase the entire sequence of dance moves. It is only 30 minutes long but she's packed a good amount of movements in that 30 minutes. . My only criticism is that it seems a bit thin and could use some more repetition to let the movements sink in but overall I would recommend it to anyone wishing to learn basic dance tecniques.

Beginning the appropriate garb showcase ...

OK, here is an easy and fairly cheap way to get some period-appropriate dance garb into your wardrobe.

First, here is a photo of a Maronite dress from 14th century Lebanon. Note the embroidery:

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y294/Christianet/maronitedress.jpg

Second, here is a Bedouin dress I found on eBay; again, note the embroidery:

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y294/Christianet/bedouindress.jpg

From the same seller, a bedouin tunic. Again, note the embroidery:

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y294/Christianet/redtunicjpg.jpg

You can see there is a very long tradition of colored, cotton cross-stitch designs among the Bedouin. I have also seen examples of this type of embroidery from Ayyubid-period Egypt. And the Bedouin went everywhere, borders never did (and still do not) matter to them.

Yes, the modern-day stuff is black instead of white; and it's cut straight with no gussets under the arms. However, I have one of these dresses, and I am about to install triangular panels and gussets in turquoise to match the sides. I have the dress split apart up the sides to do this. But the dress was only $40 and I'm using old dyed Egyptian cotton pillowcases for the gussets; I may even do contrast stitching in black on the side gusset panels.

But even if you don't alter the dress, you have something great for "everyday" dance garb.

For your A&S project, you can recreate the Maronite dress. :-)

Hopefully this helps someone!

The Al Mahala at Gulf Wars is happily approaching it's 18th year with yet another round of classes and activities, most centered around topics from the Arab World, India, Moorish Spain, Central Asia, Ottoman Empire, Silk Road, North Africa, and now proud to include East Asia as well.

The schedule is already including some wonderful activities ranging from a daily Games Hour, offering a chance to learn and play chess, mancala, and other games from the regions, to gardening and architecture how-to's, to Food Classes, Garb Classes, and of course Dance and Music.

As rich and varied as these topics are, there's still room for more! Specifically, we need YOU.

Please do consider sharing some of your knowledge at Gulf Wars this year - with approximately 4,000 attendees, the variety of interests represented is simply amazing. Not only that, but giving a demo or teaching a class is just plain fun.

Hi Everyone,

I've been trying to document sword dancing but haven't had any luck; all the info I have seen says its a purely modern aspect of the dance. I'd love to be corrected though!

My question is was any balancing done? Specifically (candle) trays?

Any books or pictures anyone can point me toward would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Andalusian dress and ghawazee coat questions...

My first question: Does anyone have any pictures of Andalusian dance costumes and their style of dance? Were big skirts worn, and was there any such thing as a gypsy-Arabic fusion dance before 1600 AD?
Sounds crazy, but I have this song that I'm dying to dance to, which is an Arabic-Flamenco fusion (all on oud). It really needs a 25 yard skirt to pull it off nicely : )

Second question: Does anyone have suggestions for sources to buy Ottoman-style cotton fabric? I just came back from Istanbul and found nothing good there in the Grand Bazaar! What is that coat called that the Cengis wore? (Not a ghawazee, technically, but looks similar).

Thanks for any input!

Which Classes Did YOU Enjoy?

It was a great Pennsic this year for classes were aplenty!
I went to some fine ones this year that I want to thank all those that shared their valuable knowledge with us. Hurrah for the teachers!

So what classes did you enjoy?
What classes do you want a repeat of next year?
From which classes are you going to practice your new found knowledge from?

Personally, my favorite class was the Khaleegy class. The teacher was so enthusiastic and the choreography was so fun that I'm thinking of finding Khaleegy classes in my area! She did a great job on the handouts too. I definitely want to take that class again next year.

The Sassy Saidi class provided things for me that I know I will use thru-out my dance experience.

And while on those lines one of the Tahtib classes that Master Dinsdale taught managed to get my father up and dancing. DANCING! My father just does not dance. AT ALL. And he enjoyed it. All I have to say is FINNALY. Thank you Master Dinsdale!

The Marketing Your MED Class was loaded with useful bits of information and the ME Troup Performance class was very interesting.

I enjoyed teaching a veil class immensely and completely beyond all means. The most rewarding part were the smiles and laughter from my students. Yay for students! lol

Those are just a few I attended and I took a bunch of classes this year. Unfortunately, I did not make it to all the classes on my schedule.

I think everyone needs to hear some feedback on classes they went to or taught.

Photos from Midnight Madness at Marrakech and Touch the Earth. These are the raw files with no adjustments. As can be seen, it was difficult to get in the darkness with the lens we had. I picked the ones that have at least one person in the photo in focus. Feel free to take. Most of them are taken by Jason Boose.

Thank you all for a wonderful night and a wonderful 37. Love you all.

Closer to Period Hafla, Big Sucess!

I wanted to thank Melisa the Loud for hosting the closer to period hafla. It was truely a unique medieval experience at Pennsic. We had more musicians than dancers, but as a dancer that is a plus, more room for me!

I enjoyed the different mix of instruments including frame drums, funny two headed drums I don't know the names of, stringed instruments, wind instruments (flute and nye like things) and some small instruments like shakers and ye old block of wood and stick. How much more period can you get than a block of wood and stick? Melody musicians took turns playing or choosing songs. Some people had sheet music to share. We had a couple of european musicians show up with thier hand crafted string instruments (a lute and something else.) They were wonderful. Even though not all intruments were compatable with eachother, (some played 1/4 tones, some didn't for example), I got the sense the musicians really enjoyed sharing music with each other and didn't mind sitting out of a song or two to listen to each other. The sound was quite different than the usual hafla or drum circle at Pennsic. We had to close up early for fear of disturbing folks in that quiet neighborhood of Pennsic, but perhaps next year we can find a good camp to host the hafla. I hope we keep doing this at least once every Pennsic!

thanks again Melisa!
What if the Dance Expo had only Live music?

<open can of worms>

So.... it's an interesting idea. My drum classes have over 30 people and so does Melissa's class (there is some over lap). One day she had 6 violins
1 viola
upright bass,
2 flutes,
a recorder,
2 ouds,
saz,
3 clarinets (besides her) plus myself and her.

I think it wouldn't be too hard to swing by Melissa's class (or my drum class), and find a person or two to play...

This would accomplish a couple of things:
1. Helps to get dancers and musicians to work together. Especially practicing!

2. Helps to join together the musician/dance community.

3. Helps to give musicians some stage time who would not get any at all.

The first 30 minutes could be Ishtar playing, the next 30 minutes, khafif, the next 30 wine and alchemy and the remaining time random musicians or something...

Thougths?

</open can of worms>

Calontir: Silk Road Symposium

Greetings One and All!

Things are starting to come together for the Silk Road Symposium, to be held October 25th in the Shire of Crystal Mines.

However, I've only got one dance class on the schedule (Ysoria's Indian Mudras class). I would really like to have a full day's worth of classes lined up. So if you can teach dancing or drumming, or both...let me know!

Also, I would like to have a dance expo (about 30 minutes worth...give or take) for over the noon hour while everyone takes some time for lunch. If someone would like to coordinate this piece, I would be eternally grateful.

To sign-up to teach a class, fill out the RUSH Instructor form here: http://calontir-rush.org/test/courseinfo.htm
Make sure to fill out in the Session comments that this class is for the Silk Road Symposium.

For more information on the event itself, including tentative schedule of other classes, check things out here: http://www.geocities.com/crystal_mynes/SilkRoad.htm

Until the next time,
Jibra'il `Attar
Regent, Silk Road Symposium

Thanks to everyone also for rolling with scheduling snafus and book print mistakes much better than I did when I discovered them!

We have a wonderful community and all of the sharing, learning, and teaching that happens at Pennsic is truly a beautiful thing!!

First off I am far from a "period" nazi, and I will openly admit to wear thing that are not "period"

With that said, you can't deny things have changed. I remember when people complained that turbans and cholis where not period. Now everything seems so different I feel like I am at Tribal Fest not Pennsic. The music, the costuming, the people. What happen? How do you feel about it?

henna-who wears it?

Ok, big time newbie here. I have been interested in SCA for many years and finally moved to a town with a small, but very active group. I have yet to contact them, so don't know if there's an middle easterners there. But, I do know this: I want a middle eastern persona who wears henna. I love the look of it and maybe it's silly to base my persona on being able to wear henna in a fairly accurate manner, but hey! I've waited a looong time for this. So who fits this? I am thinking it's an Indian tradition, not Turkish or Persian, but don't know for sure. I know that the bottom line is my persona is as accurate as I want to make her. I don't want to go crazy trying to get perfect name, costumes, accessories, etc....but I don't want to be too far off base either.
Thanks for help and ideas, Lisa

Who's gonna go? I had hoped to go to Autumn War, but won't be able to make it. And the WA Renn Faire is cancelled for the year. So, this looks like it will be my chance for a normal weekend....or at least a vacation.

I haven't been to this site before and I haven't been to this event for a few years, so I am looing forward to it. For those of you going, will there be a larger ME area? Sometimes a large household will show up. Perhpas the Horde? I've always wanted to hang with them. ;)

Anyway, just wanted to start a random chat or whatever for those of us who cannot afford a trip to the other side of the country.

Haberci (repost - link changed)

Haberci is finished for this year. You can pick up the PDF at the link below, or from the Yahoo SCA Mid East Music and Culture Group.

www.yousendit.com/download/Q01FdFdYQzNrWSt4dnc9PQ

As usual, you can also pick up a copy of Haberci at Pennsic from Your Inner Vagabond, while supplies last.

Note, the last 2 years I ran over 500 copies of the flyer myself, I am unable to run more than a few hundred this year. SO, that means I would love some help! If you print one for yourself, please print another for a friend. If you really want to help, please print a handful and take them to YIV so that others can get a copy as well. I really appreciate anyone who has done this in the past!

If you dont have access to a copier, but would like to help defray the expenses (and allow me to print more), drop me a note and I will shoot you my paypal info so that you can make a contribution. (I will have some copies to take to War this weekend, but will make a Kinko's run on MONDAY to run what ever additional amount I can!)

Thank you all!

Greetings from Kalamazoo (Three Hills, Barony Andelcrag, Pentamere, The Middle) -

Please find below some information regarding an opportunity to study with a person reknown in folkloric dance.

We do not wish to offend those who are sensitive to posts which appear to have "commercial intent" - however we feel we would be remiss in NOT mentioning this event , which is quite unique, to those who may reside within convenient driving distance of our fair city. Further, this event, which includes performances and workshops, is being produced by a non-profit organization. We hope to make this a recurrent event, and to bring in other major figures in World Dance in coming years.

Thank you for your interest -
Rutger

So, when you ladies buy jewelry, and belt and jewelry components, do you care if it is old or new or where it is from; or is it good as long as it looks right?

Would you buy new stuff in the old designs (reproductions)?
Would tou pay a little more for better construction or better fit (such as the cuffs)?
Or is it all about authentic jewelry from "over there" regardless of sharp pieces, missing pieces and often shoddy construction?
Please don't take offense to any of these questions. I do have some training in metal work and jewelry..... my instructor would have chewed my a-- if I had turned in something with the kind of workmanship I've seen on some of this stuff..... so I'm very curious!!!

Pennsic book misprints

Greetings, all!

I know this doesn't affect everyone in this LJ community, but I wanted to pass on a few misprints (and the correct info) for four Middle-Eastern classes. These classes will be listed correctly in the Haberci.

1. Mistress Elitha's Advanced Middle-Eastern Dance Techniques class is scheduled for 8/7 from 10-12 in the Middle-Eastern tent. This is correct, but she is also teaching the same class on 8/3 from 10-12 in the ME tent. The 8/3 listing is missing from the book.

2. ALL Core Fitness for Belly Dancing classes will take place at the Middle-Eastern Tent. Times are correct, but the book has the 7/31 class at Orluk Oasis.

3. BOTH Intro to Dunun classes are taking place in the ME Tent. Again, times and dates are correct, but the 8/1 class is printed as being at Orluk Oasis.

4. Melissa's Middle-Eastern Music and Rhythm Ensemble class is currently scheduled to run from 7/30-8/2. This class is running daily from 7/30-8/8!! Time and location are correct in the book.

Thanks muchly for your time and attention,
Mihri (Pennsic Middle-Eastern Class Coordinator)

Hey everyone!

Here is a two part question:

1. I know that modern day C flutes weren't period in the middle ages- I've seen some of the bards and ensembles carrying around smaller wooden flutes- what are the proper names for them?I would like to look into buying one. I have played and loved the flute for many years and would like to incorporate it into my other major hobbies of Bellydance and Medieval Reenactment.

2. I was wondering if anyone out there knew where I could buy some sheet music that incorporates the type of music that would be welcomed at SCA events- with Middle Eastern Beats and scales with a Doumbek and the aforementioned "flute"? Any Bellydance music recommendations would be great there has GOT to be some good things floating around out there but I figured I'd get your recommendations first.

would be fun to sit at the corner around camps and blow out some fun tunes with ppl in my camp :).

Thanks in advance!

Merhaba,

I have been in contact with Mistress Avril, and she with the Pennsic
Staff. I'm happy to pass on her word that the Expo has been moved to
a more traditional date and time of August the 5th, from 1PM to 4PM.
It will be reflected in the online schedule soon (but perhaps not in
the book).

She also asks that, if you have questions, contact her at
Whymzee@aol.com with the email subject of "dance exhibition" or
"Pennsic", so she knows not to delete it.

Please pass this information on, and email her (not me!) for questions.

Hi, Stash here. I just wanted to take a moment to say we are looking forward to #37. For those of you who remember us, we are in food court #2 across from the barn. Due to standing water problems that were encounterd last year, and sharing staff, The Once Again Inn and Noblemans will be under one really big tent. The menus are the same, staff the same and of course quality food. The one thing that has changed with the menu is .......PRICE....believe it or not in this economy, many menu items are down from last year. I save, you save. Hope to see you there. Stash

Music at Pennsic this year

I've noticed a few trends in Middle Eastern music since I've been coming to Pennsic (about 6 years). These trends include its growing popularity, growing skill of the musicians, way more melody instruments, and more organizational structures which allow people to play with one another. Also there are a growing number of Pennsic "celebrities", people of great skill and magnetic personalities who have a big influence over what happens on the Hafla scene.

These are all great things. However I have also noticed an emphasis on everyone playing the same songs (about 10 songs is my guess), and on everyone playing at the same time. While the music itself was beautiful, by the end of Pennsic it felt rather like the same radio station had been playing the same CD from the same band throughout Pennsic and I was bored. It also seemed it might have been hard for people to get a chance to share songs that may not have been on the list, improvise, or play solos. Perhaps this is my perception and please correct me if I am wrong, as I am dancer and not actually in the group with the musicians.

A few questions come to my mind:
What happens if someone wants to play a song that is not on the list of songs that everyone knows?
Who decides what will be the next song at the hafla?
What is more important, making sure all musicians can be included at all times or giving opportunities for smaller groups or soloists to share different songs?
How can we accommodate both of these ends?
What are the next steps, or in what new ways can Pennsic's "celebrities" work to nurture less well known musicians, helping to form a more harmonious and inclusive community?
How do we as the Middle Eastern community at Pennsic envision the new directions the community can, should or could take?

I would enjoy hearing answers to any or all of these questions from a variety of folks. I am hoping for a thought provoking discussion rather than a flame war, so please assume my statements are coming from good intentions and please frame your responses with the best of intentions also.

thank you,
Halima

SCA Appropriate Egyptian Belly Dance Garb?

I'm in the process of making a period Egyptian belly dance costume but am having problems figuring out what is pre-1600's. The funny thing about this is that there are plenty of tribal and Turkish styled dance costumes (which non of those styles are even pre 1600's if you kow your belly dance history, tribal even more so) but can't find a thing on the VERY period Egyptian belly dance?
Are velvet gloves, bra tops, harrem pants, and Egyptian styled coin hip scarves acceptable?
Or does that even matter because everybody wares tribal costumes, why not ware a bit more modern Egyptian costumes?

Please keep in mind that this thread is about period EGYPTIAN and not about a "Does tribal style belong in the SCA?" thread.
Thanks every one, look forward to hearing from you.

so, besides Tunisian and too hot coats of any kind, what kind of success have breast feeding mamas had at Pennsic? I have several wrap style tops that i used last year, but am hoping for some other suggestions. I have some not quite as period options, which I'm OK with at this point, because frankly, everything changes with a baby and sometimes you just have to be practical. :) But, I'd like to hear what has worked for others.

Your Inner Vagabond is in need of MORE STAFF for Pennsic this year! If you would like to work at YIV Coffeehouse for fun and profit during Pennsic 37, please email my assistant Nick at scadian42@yahoo.com and answer the following questions:

1. What dates you will be at Pennsic? What dates would you be available to work?
2. Have you worked for us before?
3. Would you like to work in the kitchen, as a waitress, or as a Turkish coffee monkey?
4. We have four-hour shifts available from 9AM-3AM every day. What would be your preferred hours?
5. What scheduling conflicts do you have (classes, courts, events at your encampment)?
6. Do you have any useful or relevant work experience?

If any friends, colleagues, or people you know who are new to Pennsic would like to join us, please pass this along. We will be completing the schedule around July 20th. If you can contact us before then we can be sure to fit you in, but we also welcome walk-in applicants at War.

Many thanks,
Ece (AJ)

Pennsic ME tent improvements and call for volunteers...

Hi all! The Pennsic class schedule is DONE and should be online very soon. We have a lot of great classes to look forward to this year for sure!! You will also see some improvements at the Middle-Eastern tent.

For one, we will now have a water jug!! Of course, it's always a good idea to bring your own water otherwise I'll blow my ice budget on the first day of classes, but at least you know it's there if you run out or forget yours one day.

I also have a whiteboard and dry erase markers on order so that teachers may use it to write notes (I was thinking especially of the drum classes' ability to write rhythms on the board, but anyone's free to use it however you want)

Lastly, I still need some volunteers to help open and close the tent and check on it periodically throughout the day for excessive garbage and for refilling the water jug on the busy days. I only have four on my team so far and would like a few more so that everyone doesn't have to work every day that they're there. This *is* our vacation after all, right?

If you can volunteer some time for the ME tent operations, please email me: haflagirl@gmail.com with your SCA and mundane names and your arrival date at Pennsic. Thanks!!

Thank you to everyone who came out for the 3rd Siege of Talonval hafla. I hope everyone had a good time and enjoyed the food, drink and company of friends. Without all of you, none of it would be possible. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and I hope to see you all again next year.

The Black Drum - "Rakshasa" Free Music Downloads!

"Rakshasa" was born out of a six-week break from touring with
the crazy notion that there would be time enough for one person
to write, rehearse, record, mix, master, and design art for a complete
package. This personal challenge was met and became a reality despite
so little time. Music from "Rakshasa" has been used in films, commercials,
and for various choreographies created by dance troupes from around the country.
In thanks to the amazing support that "Rakshasa" has received, I am gifting
it to the community as a free download. The follow-up CD should be
completed by November '08. Thanks to everyone for making
"Rakshasa" such a positive learning experience!

It's time to give back the love! Pass the word around. :-)

Here's the link: http://legionofdoumbek.com/

p.s. If you like the drumming, feel free to visit my other project Teribus on the web. We will release our first CD on August 4th at the Pennsic War. You can listen to demos (work in progress) at http://www.myspace.com/teribusmusic

Bring whatever instrument you play! Melissa the Clarinetchick is teaching at Pennsic! (xpost)

Hey folks,

I just got confirmation that I am teaching at Sheque's Touch the Earth tent July 30 thru August 7, 2008. The time of class is 1PM to 3PM.
My class is for all percussionists and musicians. Together we will learn the tunes that make the Haflas hoppin' at Pennsic!

ALL INSTRUMENTS are welcome. Please do not be overly concerned with period correctness. Bring your flute, sax, clarinet, trumpet, violin, cello, guitar, darbuka etc. Play whatever instrument you feel comfortable playing!! If you play it -- BRING IT!

I will have sheet music available to purchase or to borrow in the keys of Concert C, B Flat, E Flat, Bass Clef, and F. If you would like to visit www.DORKU.com to purchase advance sheet music downloads or books, please do so.

I have also decided to have two Melody Intensive sessions Saturday August 2 and Monday August 4. These sessions will be aimed at melody musicians and the drumming will be limited to 2-3 helpers. Drummers are welcome to observe those days, but my focus will be on breaking down complicated melody passages and taksim for melody instruments.

New songs for this year:

Nubar Nubar
Enta Omri
Noladati La Shalom
Hine Ma Tov (PERIOD SONG ALERT!!!)
Rast Nakis Beste (PERIOD SONG ALERT!!!)

Carmine and I will also be having Aziza day...yet to be determined.

Remember, whenever you hear my clarinet at Pennsic, you are very welcome to always sit in with me and play.

:-)

Yours in D Hijaz,
Pennsic Haflas, Parties, Concerts and other ME events?

Please help me fill in the calendar portion of the Haberci flyer for this year! Let me know if your group is hosting a hafla, a party that is really trying to draw in dancers/drummers, Mid Eastern bardics, concerts, henna parties, or other events that might be of interest to those interested in Mid or Near Eastern pursuits in the SCA.

What I need to know:
Date
Time
Location (block and camp name if its in a private camp)
Event Name
Host
Description

For those who dont know, Haberci is a flyer put together each year for Pennsic that details the Middle Eastern classes (of all types) and also has a calender for other activities. Haberci will be made available pre-war as a PDF and at war from a couple of vendors (for free), while supplies last.

Feel free to leave your party info here or message me with the details, if you prefer!

I figured this might be of interest to the community...taken from my lj...

Reconstructing History is putting out a line of Ottoman patterns!

Here's the link:
http://www.reconstructinghistory.com/

I'm super-excited. Kass is a methodical, detailed researcher, and her patterns include historical notes, and are printed on real paper, not tissue.

Plus, she's my friend, and I begged her to do Ottoman patterns next, and she's soooo awesome, she obliged.

Check 'em out. Men's and women's patterns!

Only six Middle-Eastern classes at Pennsic?

Hey all!! The deadline for submitting classes for Pennsic is May 2... just one short month away. We've only had four teachers submit six classes so far!! Classes are being scheduled as they come in, so the earlier you submit, the better your chances are of getting your preferred date, time, and location for your classes.

Besides, if y'all submit at the last minute I'll only have five days beyond that to find you a place on the schedule and scheduling 100 classes in five days? Yeah.. that would suck. Please don't make my life suck!!

Go to http://www.pennsicwar.org and follow the links to the online teacher/class submission form. Thanks!!

khaled and i will be able to finally attend pennsic this year!

aside from cure sallee and the expo, what should we absolutely NOT miss? we're trying to figure out what days we can make it, since we won't be able to do the full two weeks.

also, can you suggest simple, inexpensive garb that is close to period? i have some salwar kameez sets in natural fabrics. would those be acceptable? he has some comfortable salwar, but what should he wear on top? we don't have a ton of money to spend and i can't sew a lick, but we want to at least try to participate.
